The legality of cannabis and other cannabis-derived products, namely Cannabidiol, has been a popular topic of debate in the UK over the past few years. The year 2019 is more than halfway done, but there is still a lack of clarity about the legality of Cannabis Oil products, particularly CBD oil.

Britain’s Conservatives Influence on CBD Oil’s Legality

The Conservative Party has been ruling the UK for years, and their traditional and strict learnings have made the issue of cannabis legality oppressed with challenges.

It has been decades that the UK has viewed cannabis and all other cannabis-related products as pure evil. The Conservatives have been actively opposing the legalization of cannabis. British MP, Norman Lamb, has introduced a bill to decriminalize the possession, consumption, and processing of marijuana in 2018. However, the bill lost 66 to 52 votes.

Changes in Medicinal Cannabis Law

To date, the Conservative Party is still against the legalization of cannabis, its products, and compounds. However, the UK Government took a better turn when it legalized the medical use of cannabis under selected cases.

Upon legalization, medical practitioners can now prescribe CBD oil products to patients under these selected circumstances:

Children suffering from severe epileptic seizures

Extreme chemotherapy-induced nausea and other side effects

Severe chronic pain and muscle stiffness due to multiple sclerosis

Updated Laws on Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the primary compounds found in the cannabis plant, and it is psychoactive. While Cannabidiol offers rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory effects on a human body, THC is responsible for the “high” effect that users experience when consuming cannabis.

This is the reason why THC is still considered illegal in the UK and has been one of the arguments that brought the legality of CBD oil in question.

Is CBD oil illegal in the UK?

The answer to the question is a no – CBD oil is not illegal in the UK. To be clear, CBD oil is not illegal only if it’s used as a medicine to cure selected health issues. That being said, the possession, consumption, and processing of CBD oil for any other reasons are still illegal.

However, there is only one completely legal form of CBD oil in the UK, the hemp-derived CBD oil. This is because hemp is a non-psychoactive variation of the cannabis plant, and hemp-derived CBD oil does not possess a significant amount of THC.

Meaning, users of hemp-derived CBD do not experience the “high” effect and do not alter their mental state in any way. As a matter of fact, hemp-derived oil is wildly used as a food additive and as cosmetics in the UK.

Where to Buy CBD Oil in the UK?

Most first-time buyers of CBD oil faces a dilemma about where to buy the product. But rest assured that there is a broad CBD oil marketplace in the UK. Since medicinal hemp-derived CBD oil is legal, these types of products are available in pharmacies, online e-commerce stores, and even on Amazon UK.
